James Kuo, MD, MBA
Founder

Dr. Kuo has experience in the life science industry as a Chief Executive Officer, business development executive, and venture capitalist. Most recently, he served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Synthetic Biologics, a publicly-traded biotech company. While there, two financings and a collaboration with a European pharmaceutical company were completed. Synthetic’s stock went from $0.82 to $2.30 during his tenure as CEO. Dr. Kuo has also served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of BioMicro Systems. The company received several rounds of venture financing, achieved several million dollars in sales of an internally developed instrument for microarray research, and was eventually sold to a major European pharmaceutical company. Dr. Kuo has further served as the Chief Executive Officer of Discovery Laboratories, a publicly-traded company developing surfactant-based respiratory therapeutics. Dr. Kuo has been Associate Director of Licensing and Development at Pfizer and Vice President of Business Development at Myriad Genetics. He has also been Managing Director of HealthCare Ventures, a $378 million venture capital fund. Dr. Kuo is currently Chairman of Monarch Labs, a leading biotherapy company. He received his MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and his MBA from the Wharton School of Business. He received his BA in molecular biology from Haverford College.


Yosyong Surakitbanharn, PhD
Vice President of Pharmaceutical Sciences

Dr. Surakitbanharn has 20 years of experience in the pharmaceutical science of drug development ranging from discovery through commercial launch. He has been a pharmaceutical consultant since 2008 specializing in the CMC development of drug products. Prior to his consultancy, Dr. Surakitbanharn was Director of Formulation Development at Verus and led the successful CMC development of Twinject® (epinephrine auto-injector) for commercialization in both the U.S. and E.U. markets. He also worked in Pharmaceutical Research and Development at Pfizer (La Jolla) developing small molecule drugs e.g. an antiviral drug for HIV treatment, Viracept®, an oncology drug for cancer treatment, Axitinib etc. He began his pharmaceutical career at MOVA prior to joining Agouron (a Pfizer company). Dr. Surakitbanharn received his BS in chemistry from Ramkhamhaeng University in Thailand, MS in analytical chemistry from Murray State University in Kentucky and PhD in analytical chemistry from University of Arizona, where he also was a post-doctorate in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.


Geraldine P. Kuo, MD
Founder

Dr. Kuo has been a Staff Physician for the VA San Diego Healthcare System since 2001. The San Diego VA treats more than 250,000 veterans per year. She has more than 15 years of clinical experience in treating patients with musculoskeletal disorders and help found the musculoskeletal clinic at the VA San Diego Healthcare System. Dr. Kuo earned her BS in Biology from Byrn Mawr College and her MD from Jefferson Medical College. She received her board certification in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and completed her residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, where she served on the Medical Executive Committee as Chief Resident. She was the recipient of the Sidney and Elizabeth Licht Award for article of the year in Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
